Projection mapped paintings
I really like the way the artist has used the projection to create motion through the light on top of the painting. I think that I would like to create something which draws the idea of emerging the projection and original painting together somehow. The animation of the light is very similar in that which I have researched on architectural projection mapping.
After I stumbled across this video on YouTube this is exactly what I meant by emerging the projection animation and the original painting too. I really like that this artist applied something as simple as changing the weather. This has me thinking about my documentary and the nature of what the protestors are trying to get across. I think that potentially trying to create a projection mapped painting which shows the effects of climate change could work really well.

Style
I have created a mood board of the kind of illustration style I would like to use. I do not have as much experience with painting as I do drawing. I wanted to find a style which best matches my own style of drawing. Also considering the nature of projection mapping this idea of having different compositions (sections) to animate is a lot easier so having connecting bold lines which have lots of detail but primarily completely cut off sections will be more interesting to animate too. My only concern is its quite cartoony and the serious nature of the concept might class but I want to experiment with just trying to create a digital drawing to see how practical it is.
After experimenting with this idea of illustration style I have decided that it is too comic/cartoonish to be take seriously with the nature of what I want to show. I think I will aim for a more simple line drawing style for my piece as this would still have the digital black and white style but with more of a serious tone. To stay away from this cartoonish style I will use photographs instead and create a mixed media styled animation. I think this was a good experiment to start with to see how to get to grips with Illustrator and digital drawing.
Tutorial w/ Jeremiah
After having a discussion with Jeremiah about the technicalities of interactivity within what I want to create regarding something interactive I believe that being able to utilize this method of projection mapping and being able to apply it more effectively to a concept is more valuable and doable at this time. I believe being able to move forward from my last project and gaining a better understanding of how to apply concept to this medium is more important.
He suggests that I start looking into coding. I have bought a book which should help me understand it as I have no knowledge.

I have decided that whilst everything that is currently going on with the climate, it is my duty to create art on this as it is the biggest threat to our planet right now. It also has a great link with my documentary which is based up the environmental political group Extinction Rebellion.

It is proved that heatwaves are increasing yearly and the overall temperature has risen since the start of the millennia. Due to these higher temperatures there is increased rates of evaporation which causes drought.
Contrasting this is the large amount of heavy downpours which have been continuing to become gradually worse over time. These heavy downpours cause flash floods and create a huge amount of environmental disaster affecting wildlife and crops.

The US climate center and UK Met office and NASA have all proven the same statistics that the last 20 years have been the hottest years on record.

The US climate center and UK Met office and NASA have all proven the same statistics that the last 20 years have been the hottest years on record.
The simple factor in this is energy consumption and how this energy is created. By burning fossil fuels this is creating huge amounts of C02 in the atmosphere. Before C02 consumption the estimated amount of carbon per parts per million was 280, now it is estimated at double that at 400 parts per million and rising. As a result the Earth is 1 degree hotter than before the industrial revolution. This might not seem like much but this 1 degree has a huge impact on the climate, the ocean and wildlife. But the biggest impact of this 1 degree is the weather, there are more frequent and longer periods of heatwaves, drought, flooding and increased rates of extinction.
The issue here is that most of these problems are being caused by more western civilizations which are not being directly affected by these issues. The smaller countries are being affected as they receive more "freak weather" which is bad alone but the climate change is manipulating this into something much more devastating.
Flooding
Bangladesh is one of the most affected by climate induced flooding. According to National Geographic "an area larger than Manhattan is washed away". With theses more frequent floods, there leaves less time for recovering from the devastation caused to peoples live and agricultural land. There are roughly 165 million people in such as small area which a huge amount of people living along the coastal areas and islands. Estimations suggest that over 13.3 million people will be affected in the area by climate change. The people which will be most affected are living in poverty struck areas such as Dhaka's slums. There are also huge issues with plastic choking the water ways which is another environmental problem which is incredibly overwhelming. With all these environmental issues present there is such a huge threat to life here.
Drought
Ethiopia has a stomach churning estimated 8 million people being affected by the ever increasing drought caused by extended periods of heat. Somalia has had a combination of both of these extreme weather where the long periods of hot weather has caused drought and this has caused a juxtaposition of flash flooding, depleting crop and livestock, affecting 1 million people.
These are only a few places being affected in a huge way and essentially being ignored by the masses and media. Our own government denies any action towards affective climate change prevention. The people in the UK are not seeing signs of this affecting them or their lives which is why nothing is being done. It is unfair that the issues caused by the wealthy west is affecting these eastern and southern climates where people are so much more vulnerable and struggle without the increase in freak weather.

Why are people in the UK not believing this data?
I have a lot of first hand knowledge on how people react when they are confronted with their actions against the environment. It is simple, people are not willing to make personal sacrifices which do not benefit them straight away. Essentially, it is ego which gets in the way of people changing the way in which they live. Older people's excuses are always framed with "well in my day.." and "thats not how we were brought up to do/see/act about it..." this attitude completely denies the ability to change, usually because it is not beneficial. Perhaps if we gave people a sweetie every time they do something good towards the environment this attitude would change. Otherwise without personal sacrifice there will be no change.

Brits are experiencing heatwaves which are perceived as "holiday weather" which is positive to most, but many are feeling the negative effects of this heat we are experiencing during the summer periods such as farmers. Last years hottest temperature soared to 38 degrees in parts of the uk. This number has been increasing yearly and this number is estimated to be 1 degree higher this year. People have died from heat stress and heat stroke due to not being able to adjust to the heat. This will only get worse if we cannot curve this. The most affected people will be our elderly, sick, children and deprived civilians.
Currently in the UK there has been a huge change in consciousness on how these issues are being perceived, still by the few rather than the majority. Extinction Rebellion a newly formed non-violent political environmental group have been making waves with educating people on climate issues such as what is happening in the rest of the world by performing acts of rebellion.
These rebellious acts have landed over 1,000 civilian arrests due to road blocks, vandalism and other things such as glueing themselves to DLR trains and landing a pink boat in the middle of Oxford Circus. They been planning a week of rebellion for the week of the 15th of April and have held many events prior to this which I have been filming.

Concept mood boards
I have created a couple of mood boards of my intended idea. I have focused on a triad of the worse environmental extreme weathers happening currently. I have still yet have to consider how to order them within the animated sequence.
I have focused on finding images which are by photographer/or more "photographic" and some which are more documentary.

I have drawn up some rough sketches of what I am planning to create. I want to create a digital painting which is brought to life by projection mapping. I have decided the best way to achieve this is by having the drawing print itself being incredibly basic, a simple line drawing, leaving the back and foreground to be empty of anything, white space. Then with the projection mapping this will be filled with the content created using After Effects and show an animated sequence over a period of time.

Storyboard of animation sequence
I have planned to section my environmental factors into 3 elements, starting with something familiar, storm/flood and drought. They will be gradually brought in and change over a 2 minute time period between each sky panel moving across.
