Bioluminescent Forest - Projections in the Forest

Now I really love this film, this team used a sort of live technique of mapping and animating on the spot whilst someone else films the live action animation. What I really love about this idea is it feels magical, it brings something which isn't visibly alive and gives it a new life. This simple idea is so alluring with its luminescent visuals and the combined animation movements really bring this idea if life to the piece.

I've included the making of the video as I found it very interesting.

The making of

Projection Mapped Paintings

Another video which has a this element of bringing something to life is these projection mapped psychedelic paintings. The colours and flashing lights combined remind me of a pinball machine. This idea of something which is 2D becoming 3D through the use of light is really interesting. I suppose the nature of the kind of painting also enhances this idea of movement as the style of psychedelic paintings tend to be movement based.

It's Lit

"The world is your canvas now, what are you gonna do with that"

Similar to the psychedelic paintings, this mural which is projection mapped through a mapping software then animated is really interesting as combining a more artistic visual - compared to architecture - and projection.

Tiny People Tribe

This piece is really charming, the idea of little light creatures climbing in through blinds and round bright corners is really magical again. This idea of enchantment and fantasy is coming through a lot with ideas such as the luminescent forest and this piece.

Box

This high production piece utilising movement and mapping is really interesting. The movement is playful which keeps the audience more interested and combined with the animation this creates a sort of realism to the piece. The idea to me that is coming through the most is form.

Get your energy back

Another video which uses a model to map onto. The idea of showing electricity and energy which would not be seen otherwise is another kind of fantasy styled piece. The luminescence works so well with showing energy which is probably why the luminescent forest video works at creating a magical and fantasy theme. Energy means life.

Hickboo Animation

A fascinating way to tell a story, yet again though this idea of fantasy is brought through, this time through the content of the story itself. I do believe though this fantasy element is enhanced by the projection mapping.

---------------------------------------

Overall, after looking into a huge collection of projection mapping videos/films online I have compiled a small amount of films which really captivated me. I believe after analysing the ideas and content of the films there is a common theme that when showing light there is an idea of energy connected to this. The idea of energy combined with the movement of animation creates the idea of life. Talking about energy is quite spiritual by nature but combining something which is completely man-made contrasts really well and creates something which is absorbing. I do not feel as though this comes through enough with your typical projection mapped architecture. Looking through these films has reinsured my ideas of not continuing with projection mapping onto buildings. I believe that I want to take inspiration from one of the creators in the It's Lit video "The world is your canvas now, what are you gonna do with that" I know that I want my work to say something and make a point, I need to be careful that the fantasy undertone of the projection doesn't take away or send the wrong idea out if this is what I want to say. I am almost sold on the idea of creating a projection mapping film. As much as I enjoyed the physical aspect of my last project, I would really like to try and combine my videographer knowledge and skills with this new love of mine.

Now I need to figure out what I want to say with my projection.
