Maps & Networks - Vicky Smith Expanded Cinema
Notes
My group were given the task of creating an expanded cinema installation within the uni using multiple and mutable screens. This at first stumped me as the limitations of only having our phone screens and the computer in R19 hindered how creative we could be with our experiment. We decided to take inspiration from Point Source, Tony Hill 1973 where he used a skeleton metal cube and projected light onto it and onto a white wall and changed the perspective of the shadow by moving the light source closer and further away from the cube.
We thought about what we could use for the screens, we had our phones, the computer and the projector, we played with the idea of obstructing the projector with an object and filming it using a phone. We then talked about filming the filming three times so we would have three screens to show the experience in a Brecht fashion. We wanted our piece to have some depth behind it so we chose the theme of 'Humans are trash' and show footage of generic global warning b-roll. We also played with the obstructing object, we first thought about using a hanging mobile which had shards of broken glass on it which looked like leaves when obstructing, we chose to pair this with images of deforestation.
Experiment
Final Outcome
Elena so lovingly put them all together how we envisioned.
Looking into expanded cinema has broaden my perspective on how to create an emursive installation performance.
