Maps & Networks - Projection Mapping
Works
This installation is one of the most talked about projection mapping pieces as it creates a fantasy world within the space by mapping the staging and then projecting onto it. I find this concept of creating an element of escapism through the projection an interesting way to emurse the audience to another place.
I believe this is such a clever way to engage the audience with interacting with the piece, it is inviting and makes you think whether or not it would be a good idea to allow the public to landscape the world. I cannot find much information about the installation however I would think it works in three stages based on the height of the peaks and the lows of the water would be fed back to a computer which would change the projection based on the interaction. Looking at this got me thinking about how I could incorperate this idea with a modern landscape. Is there a way that my audience could interact with piece.
The idea behind this projection piece was to capture India and create a display on the Brighton Pavilion. The colours and details are what make this stand out so much, the bold colours highlight the beauty of the architecture. Obviously the amount of time and work put into creating this is way beyond my grasps for the limitations of the project however the site specific aspect of mapping the architecture is fascinating and something to be considered maybe on a smaller scale.
How it works?
I went to YouTube...
This tutorial was helpful in a sense that it shows you how to do a very basic shape, it uses a software called VPT7 which allows you to connect a laptop to the projector and physically move your image onto the structure you're projecting onto. I am not sure if this will work for me as I don't have a laptop currently and I am unsure on whether you can use an after effects animation for each side however I will look into it.
This video isn't technically projection mapping however it is a good fake attempt with a lot of after effects. What I like is it shows different kinds of animations you could potentially use on your projection map.
This by far was the most helpful video as I could see how I could create my own with ease. The only parameter could possibly be that I need to be able to know the EXACT positioning of my sculpture and projector to map it before I animate it and then has to stay in that place.
