Maps & Networks - Presentation Notes
After presenting my idea to Rosie and the class I wanted to put everything down into a post which I can ramble onto too.
Some thoughts were how confident I am at being able to create my own built city scape, more specifically what materials I would use and how long it would take to do. Anike suggested using Lego which is something I hadn't even considered myself as a building material option. However after thinking about the concept of the project which is a celebration of technology, I believe Lego would make the most sense as it is created through technology compared to my own self built cityscape which wouldn't have that emphasis. Though if I had to create my own cityscape it would be possible to create within a 3-4 day time frame.
Also another thing which was brought up was what was the cityscape going to have in it. Originally I wanted the cityscape to be generic and made up so the audience could easily understand and relate to the understanding of the piece easier. It was suggested that I use an already existing cityscape which is familiar to everyone, London popped into my mind instantly and then this brought up more question marks in my head about what to include.
Another question was about what colour I was going to have my cityscape be. I have looked into projection mapping and considered the advice I have been taught which suggests white reflects the colours best. However, through my own photographic knowledge and background I also know that a 50% grey absorbs colour best. So I explained. I will need to do some testing on this further myself.
Rosie suggested that I need to work on the concept more. Though I do feel I may have not explained my concept well enough I hope my learning agreement clears it up more. I am still confident in the simplicity of my concept and leaving it to be so vague allows more of a creative flow in the animation stage. I will create a storyboard of a "narrative" of the animated sequence which will loop so it is clearer.
Another thought popped up whilst thinking about my idea is the fact that the spinal corridor (The projected space for the installations) is bright, covered in white walls and reflects light all around creating a bright space. This is an issue. I am unsure onto whether my projection would show up at all if it is in such a bright space on a blending white sculpture. I also remember Rosie saying about a possibility of gaining access to installing our work in some of the other galleries on campus which would be a lot darker and would work better with my idea.
Overall, I am still confident within my abilities to be able to pull this all together within the time frame. I am utilising study week to experiment with and finalise my ideas and gather myself more. Towards the end of the study week I hope to have started working on my sculpture.
