Maps & Networks - Initial Ideas
In class we started considering ideas for the theme of Maps & Networks in groups of four. In my group we decided to create a mind map of ideas, my initial idea are highlighted in yellow.
I wrote down:
Propaganda maps:
from the first and second world war. I found an image of one which had a huge Churchill climbing on a globe being fought off by nazi soldiers. I had the idea of using the aesthetics of the old styled poster and creating a Brexit themed propaganda map in the same style but highlighting a relevant issue.
Escapism:
I had this idea of how people react to nature and how people often escape from the business of modern life and creating an installation of a multi screen contrast of modern day and places where people escape to.
Sculpture:
I also had an idea of creating a sculpture and projection mapping onto it.
mask and facial recognition: I had a couple vague ideas about using masks and tricking facial recognition as an experiment, an interactive installation where people can put on the masks and interact with a facial recognition camera
Secret filming & cameras and how people react to them -
The idea came to me during the first lecture for cultures of convergence when we were discussing the Panopticon prison system where there is a center where an observer can view all the surroundings in a 360 twist without the occupants knowing whether or not they are being watched.
Designed by Jeremy Bentham.
This got me thinking about how CCTV and the Panopticon are similar in a sense that they both share the same principle of you could be being watched but unsure if you are. This also got me thinking about the power behind the a symbol of surveillance and if the idea that you're being watched is enough to manipulate your behavior.
After looking into the idea I have decided to choose three to experiment with Projection Mapping and Propaganda Maps.
