Editing
I went into editing act 1 with a clear vision, to start the edit so it was calm and then it begins to become more erratic as the signs begin to flood in more and more, this became a lot harder than anticipated as there was minimal footage to work from. Trying to figure out how to relate the visual to the audio was also a restraint. I chose to change all of the footage to black and white as this allows the viewer to not be consumed by the "pretty colours of advertising" and be more content focused. I, the one with the control, would allow the viewer to be shown their conformity and consumerism behaviors by using colour through masking.
I wanted the first scene to show the consumers and chose this to be the first piece of footage which the viewer will see. The clip itself was less than 10 seconds long which was difficult to work with as the audio underneath was a lot longer, so I decided to chop the footage up and I applied "apply default transition" to the end and beginning of each piece of footage then layered them on top of one another. By doing this I have conducted a scene which looks as if there were many passers by and created the illusion of mass "consumers".
I found it incredibly frustrating to be able to create the effect that I wanted to for the video. I tried duplicating the footage on top of one another and then editing them each individually and then trying to mask the layer which was on top to reveal the layer below which was meant to be the "signs". However, after a couple of tries I managed to do it, to then find that it would only apply this effect on a couple of pieces of footage and not others. As most of the footage was handheld, this meant that the masks had to be a lot more intricate too. I managed to figure out how to get around this so that the mask would follow the sign by using "tracking" which would take key frames and follow the sign in sections.
Another complication arouse when I tried to apply two separate masks on one piece of footage. I needed to reveal the original colour on both of the lights but at different times for it to be effective.
I managed to figure this out, by splitting the footage into two separate pieces of footages allowed me to create two masks.
Overall, I think that this effect worked really well with Act 1. I would have liked to have continued this throughout the whole of act 1 however it was incredibly time consuming trying to figure out how to apply these "masks" and would encourage other people to prove me wrong with how simple it is to create by themselves. I feel that with the footage I was given to edit act 1, I managed to create a humorous, interesting and effective act to show the idea of conformity and consumerism.
