Fields & Frames - Sound

I knew from creating my Pro Tools submission piece that I wanted to experiment with using glass. I created a sound using a glass spinning on a tiled floor and then reversed the sound in Pro Tools and completely fell in love with the interesting sound it produced.

I used adobe audition as I didn't have access to Pro Tools over the Easter break which is when I had delegated some time to creating this. I wish I had used Pro Tools and I felt very overwhelmed by the lack of memory of the software I had left for Audition. I believe if I used Pro Tools I would have created something a little more fine tuned.

I started collecting diegetic sounds for the piece such as when it was raining outside, when it wasn't raining outside with cars and birds, wind. I also collected a bank of sounds which I could simply manipulate to create other sounds. I started by constructing my outside raining element of the visual which I had to add lots of really subtle EQ changes to be able to create something which sounded okay. I also had to study how an empty sort of deserted space sounded like, I jotted down the sounds I was hearing from the clips or other soundscapes relating to deserted spaces. These often encountered heavy wind sounds, no birds, sometimes crickets, some kind of deep horn-like sound which I have researched and is just the sound of the wind hitting dunes in the distance. I have considered all of this and have attempted, to the best of my abilities to recreate this to what I believe the space would sound like if it were deserted. I then merged the two sound pieces and started to add in the non diegetic experimental sounds to the rendered video. I thought a lot about what the visuals would say and look like and one thing which I didn't really think came across so much was the irreversibleness of climate change once these extreme weathers have taken over. I have taken this quite literally by using my glass sounds in reverse to try and create this idea through sound. I have also thought a lot about how time really comes into this concept and wanted something which represents the looming lack of time we have left to change this so I whilst clearing out my hard drive I found an experiment based on the theme of time where I had use the sound of a flicking switch to match the light changing outside from day to night. I really like the sound and thought about using a similar idea of a flick of a switch or a tick of a clock to represent this.

Overall, I am not super happy with my sound piece, I didn't delegate enough time to sculpt this in a more intricate way and I think this shows. I would have liked this to have more layers. I would also like to adapt the soundscape for the deserted element as I should have made the wind horn sound coming from the distance a lot quieter and it is a little too loud and therefore distracting. Perhaps the tick isn't entirely necessary once I had watched the two together, I would have liked to have experimented more with the glass sounds and perhaps even made something completely experimental.
