Fields & Frames - Ideas Research & Decided Path

So far I know that I want to combine projection mapping and video. Now I need to figure out what I want to say with these technologies and formats.

Let's figure out the physicality's of this idea so far. It would have to be either shot at dusk or in the dark. What do you want the light to show?

Initial Ideas

- Visually showing the sounds of nature such as bird songs, Birdworld, not projection mapping

- Manipulating a landscape, making a statement about the environment
- Character based: life experience, showing something that cannot be seen, germs.
- Non permanent graffiti?
- Rubbish on the floor turning into nature
- Mycology
- Spiders

After a quick chat with Kathleen about some of the research I have found already and myself explaining that I am at a bit of a mental block with the context of the idea, we discussed Mycology, spiders and their webs, gardens and famous peoples gardens. Kathleen explained to not worry so much at the moment about the context and to start experimenting with some ideas I already have and researching.

Bio

Dr. Siouxsie Wiles

Dr Siouxsie Wiles paints using luminescent bacteria which reacts with the darkness. The bacteria obviously is live and moves so when she is putting on a exhibition of her paintings they have to be timed perfectly in order for the bacteria to still stay in this form of intent.  This is a very amusing and almost trivial medium for expression and therefore is unique as replicating such at thing would be difficult.

infinity cube

The infinity cube shows the movement of bioluminescent dinoflagellates which are a tiny single cell organisms which glow in the dark. The dinoflagellates are filmed reacting to various different things mostly sounds such as a heart beat, music, change of air pressure etc. The piece contrasts the natural and the artificial. This idea of combining a phenomena of luminescence and the immersive nature of this man made cube is something very interesting. Could something like this be replicated and express something different?

Looking into James Turrell this idea of manipulating a landscape is really interesting such as simply adding neon lights can change the mood and obviously appearance. Physically making a ladn

Gilbert White - Hampshire Wake garden

Looking into Gilbert White I found that he studied birds which links with my idea of showing bird song. Perhaps there is something else within this.

Mycology

Paul Stamets - The future is fungi

I've been really interested in Mycology since I was very young and started looking into experiments done using fungi. I found this one experiment which uses fungi to navigate its way through a replicated Japanese subway system. The fungi spread out naturally at first but after a while the fungi reorganized itself to the most efficient route to get to the food source. The experiment found that the fungi actually demonstrated a more efficient way to navigate through the subway system than human or technology. What I really find quite interesting is the experiments visual aspect. I have always been interested in graphs and different ways in which data is interpreted and the natural aspect of the fungi and the man constructed

Tutorial

After a tutorial with Rosie we discussed my research and ideas but I've realized that I am focusing too heavily on the concept. We discussed perhaps looking into physical and element changes and audience mostly. I think I put off a projection mapped installation as I wanted to save this for my grad and create a more immersive and interactive space. I have been playing with the idea of interaction but the coding and programing behind it is beyond my knowledge and mental capacity at the moment. We discussed this idea of using Rosie's projection screen material and using it to make a space. The idea of a large space sectioned off to form a square with this material as walls projecting through it is very interesting, the audience can simply walk around it or even go inside. Practically I would have to find 3 other "walls" for this concept or create them myself. I would also need 4 projectors. A simple concept such as video or generated material.

Another idea we talked about was creating something similar but on a much smaller scale such as the size of a childs paddling pool. Simply, the audience would walk around the structure and the projection would shine through. This idea would be great but I would also have to use multiple projectors and I wouldn't need to map this as it would be a square.

We also discussed using her back projector screen which shows projection on either side.

Then I started thinking about creating a moving sculpture to projection map onto.

I also went back through my research and really love the effects of projection mapping onto paintings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After considering the physicality's of what I want to create I have settled on projection mapping paintings. At this stage I think I want to physically paint onto canvas. However I am going to experiment a lot with papers and colours etc. I would also like to projection map onto preexisting paintings as an experiment.

I would like to create three paintings if possible, Rosie agreed that it might be ambitious to create three with three separate sound pieces but the plan is to start with experimenting then create one and so forth.

I would also have liked to have made my own frames but I feel as though I will run out of time to do this so I will not push to do so.
