Bit about BREXIT
BREXIT
A referendum - was held on Thursday 23rd June, 2016 where we voted Leave 51.9% to 48.1% Remain. The Leave vote won, with a turnout of 71.8% of voters estimating around 30 million people in the UK.
The European Union - Economic and Political partnership which involves 28 European countries. This is a single market which means goods and people are able to be traded or move around freely.
We have agreed on 2 years to agree on the terms of the split, starting back in 2016.
The UK is scheduled to leave the EU at 11pm UK time Friday 29th March 2018. An extension can be allowed if all parties agree, then a 28 day period will be allowed to continue negations.
The agreement has been made into two parts. A 585 page withdrawal agreement. This includes a bill of £39bn which is owed to the EU by the UK. How UK citizens that live abroad in the EU will have to do and about the Northern Irish Border and how it may or may not return.
A non legally binding statement about how the UK and EU relationship will continue in the future.
There will be a vote by MPs on the 12th December to choose a deal.
Northern Irish Border
The UK holds a 310 mile land border with the EU. Due to past troubles seeing towers, surviellence and check points may spark an issue with the Northern Irish Public and the Republic of Irelands public. The EU and UK have agreed to a back stop - a safety net so there is no hard border to avoid these issues.
Northern Ireland will keep some of its EU rules for ease of trading/living. Theresa May doesn’t want the backstop and say there will not be a triggering aspect to the borders.
If a deal isn’t in prospect by July 2020 an extension period will be agreed upon.
There are many issues against the UK leaving the EU such as:
- Leaving the EU without a deal agreed upon
- another vote in parliament which will delay the leave
- Another EU referendum as the vote was considered too close to count
- A general election in favor of the Labour party
- Theresa May being removed by MP’s and the new leader agrees upon a different deal
Theresa May was against BREXIT during the referendum but has changed her mind due to what the public voted for. Her “slogan” is “Brexit means Brexit” basically saying theres no going back.

I wanted to look into Brexit so I could have some more context behind this idea. I think there could be a series of propaganda map posters here relating to the split itself between the EU & UK, the Northern Irish Border and potentially the divide between the UK on the issue itself.
The series would be a series of 3 posters sharing the shame aesthetic as world war 1 & 2 propaganda maps but with the current theme of Brexit.
The issues with creating these is they would be 100% sourced images, they would take up a lot of wall space for the exhibition. It would be very photoshop heavy. It wouldn't be as challenging as the Projection Mapping idea, though I could incorporate the "why so .... ?" mapping idea more to this context.
I think after looking into all of this I do not feel as passionate as I do about the projection mapping idea.
