The Global Positioning System (or better known as gps)

What is GPS tracking?

After the invention and release of Sputnik by Russia the foundation of GPS began to evolve. Through measuring radio signals, satellites could be tracked by measuring the frequencies that it emits. The location of the receivers on Earth are tracked by the distance from the satellite, giving locational co-ordinates making way for GSP tracking which we see today.

What are the uses of GPS in a modern society?

There are many uses in todays society for GPS tracking, here is a list of some of the uses I like:
  • Being able to locate a family member through a gps based tracking app or device
  • sat nav for car journeys
  • emergency services
  • visual journal, collection of pictures or notes based on where you have travelled and your phones hot spots
  • Prevents shark attacks through shark trackers as the tracker alerts guards when they come too close to shore
  • GPS trackers are attached to pharmaceutical shipments incase they are stolen and can be tracked
  • sport tracking
  • GPS tracking art such as creating a picture by following a specific route
  • Geocash
  • Guiding Google'd driverless car through the streets
  • Tracking endangered species

What does the future hold in relation to GPS tracking?

GPS can be used for the good of the world however there are a lot of things which GPS could be used against the greater good of the world such as tracking specific people to cause damage to them. I recently watched a video on Anonymous Youtube channel and they were discussing the potential misuse for new technologies such as having a chip placed under the skin so you will not have to use paper money or a card. However, with the benefits of these new technologies being promoted we are ignorant to the fact that we could potentially be heading towards a future where everyone and anyone will be able to track you, know everything about you, a world without privacy.
