A Sudden Gust of Wind - A Different Perspective

I decided that I didn't simply want to create a soundscape. I wanted my sound piece to tell a story, even if it is a simple story. I decided that I liked the idea of creating a piece from the perspective of one of the people in the image, I chose the blinded woman.

I started by making a very basic attempt of trying to create a "submerged" "muffled" sound by exporting my base and then cutting the clip where I wanted the muffled effect to happen then putting it into Effects and changing the EQ to only allow the middle tones to be heard the most prominently. I like the effected and found that the piece is a lot more varied however I wasn't happy with the sound still because of the dryness of the paper sounds and very little details in the base sound piece.

In my second attempt I began to create more of a build before the submerged bit so that it didn't sound as flat which I think worked very well but needed more of a "gust". I also used the EQ filter and a little bit of reverb to try and take away some of the fluttering paper dryness.

In my third attempt I yet again fine tuned the build up of wind and added a swoosh before the "drop" so that it was more distinguishable.

Amended base soundscape

I wasn't happy with the end result still and went back to the base soundscape to try and fine tune that more.

I went back into my base soundscape and amended the glitchy sounding paper flutter at the beginning and created a more windy sound by adding more reverb and changing the pitch on some of the wind sounds as the deeper the wind sound the more windy it was. Then I changed some of the levels of sound as some things were too noisy like the rain sound and some of the wind sounds.

I then put the exported version into a new file and started to create my new version from the perspective of the blinded woman.

I followed the same method as before except this time I built the wind sounds more by using clips from the gusty moments within the sounds I recorded and made them louder and faded them slightly too so it didn't sound manipulated it needed to flow still. I also added in some more paper fluttering as the submerged clip lost a lot of that sound and as that action of the scarf wrapping round her head the paper flutters out so I faded in a clip of paper fluttering and made that very subtly quiet.

Final piece

Overall I am happy with the sound piece that I have created. I started without knowing anything about the software or how to work it and now I would confidently say that I can create a sound piece using Audition. I would have liked to have created sounds for all of the images however I spent a lot of time tweeking my final piece to be able to have had time to experiment further.
