Dziga Vertov

“I am eye. I am a mechanical eye. I, a machine, am showing you a world, the likes of which only I can see.
My road is towards the creation of a fresh perception of the world. Thus I decipher in a new way the world unknown to you.”

Man with a Movie Camera, 1929

Dziga Vertov, a soviet film maker, emphasises the importance of revealing the truth using film. Starting out as a news reel editor, he continued this idea that the camera is a machine to capture the truth even after critics sought Vertov's experimental series to be certifiable.

“All cinematic means and possibilities, all cinematic inventions, techniques and methods that might reveal and show the truth.”  KINOPRAVDA 1934

Vertov working in a time of new age cinema, was disinterested in showing the beauty of cinema or telling a narrative but to construct a series of footage/images which represented a merge of persuasion, politics and the truth. Vertov's "a man with a movie camera" vision was to show himself within the film-making process as a way to project the concept of self-reflective cinema as a way to reveal the truth. The visual language of the film is simple which helps amplify the idea of "film truth".

Vertov's films are formed by fragments of shots put into a sequence which reveal a deeper truth which otherwise would be looked past. Famously revealing himself at the end of the film showing himself holding the camera; in Vertov's series he would include personal contact details for the audience to be able to contact him at the end of an episode.

"This is I, the machine, manoeuvring in the chaotic movements, recording one movement after another in the most complex combinations."

We aim to reveal the truth through our documentary in the same way that he did, our first "act" would consist of documentary styled footage stitched together in a sequence which should reveal truth. Furthermore, Vertov makes the film camera a part of his film which is inspiration that we have taken from him. We want our viewers to be aware that they are watching something and know how we achieved our film.
